The 587th Bomber Squadron under the 9th Air Force was activated in May 1943 at MacDill Airfield, Florida, and in February 1944, the squadron was ordered to the European theater to participate in the Normandy landings, where its primary mission was to destroy the enemy's battle heart by attacking bridges, gun emplacements, and airfields, earning the squadron the nickname "BRIDGE BUSTERS. They were nicknamed the "Bridge Busters. This patch was a rarity at the time, drawn by a soldier with an artistic sense. The depiction of a cap-wearing skull with a cigarette in his mouth is a Yankee spirit itself, and even shows a sense of reserve.
