This is Tailor Toyo's reversible sukajan, the "EAGLE & TIGER" x "ROARING TIGER" Fall/Winter 2025 model.
Sukajan first began being sold as souvenirs at U.S. military base stores shortly after the war, but during the 1950s, the heyday of sukajan production, Kosho Shokai, the predecessor to Toyo Enterprises, the company that develops the Tailor Toyo brand, boasted a 95% supply share.
This piece, made by a direct descendant manufacturer that has been making sukajan for over half a century, is crafted with impeccable attention to detail, from embroidery technique to stitching.

■The unique appeal of "Western clothing originating in Japan"
The style, familiar to U.S. soldiers, features a shape modeled after a baseball jacket and zippers reminiscent of flight jackets, along with oriental embroidery that made it a popular souvenir.
Sukajan jackets, while still Western clothing, feature a unique Japanese aesthetic and a reversible design that can be enjoyed on both sides. In recent years, thanks to the revival boom of '90s street fashion, they have become a highly sought-after item.
■ The Sukajan's Impressive Design
The front features a mid-1950s design of an eagle and a tiger glaring at each other, a rare find even among vintage Sukajan jackets.
Since the word "Japan" does not appear on the back, each of the motifs is embroidered in a deformed, centerpiece size.
The gradation of the eagle's wings and the tiger's stripes are meticulously rendered using colorful threads, while the dragon on the chest is delicately rendered with thin lines that make the most of the green of the fabric.

The tiger's muscular body is realistically depicted using narrow horizontal embroidery, achieving a powerful finish that only skilled, experienced artisans can achieve.
The sleeves are darker than the body, a "reverse color scheme," and the pink and black combination is immensely popular in 1950s culture.
The embroidery is done using a special "horizontal swing sewing machine" rather than a standard automatic sewing machine, allowing the artisan to control the swing width and needle foot. Under the supervision of an artisan who has been working in embroidery since the 1950s, we have achieved a professional finish that is just like the original.

The ribbing used on the collar, cuffs, and hem is stretchy, improving the fit when worn.
Faithfully recreating vintage specifications, such as the double-welt pockets, a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, and the butterfly zipper for reversible clothing.
The material is acetate, the most standard for sukajan, and is characterized by its soft texture and drape.
Due to material restrictions following the war, silk thread was difficult to obtain, so acetate, with its luxurious silk-like feel, was used instead.

The front features a mid-1950s design, unique among vintage tiger prints, depicting a white tiger from an overhead angle. Using a needlepoint technique, the tiger stripes are not fully embroidered, leaving the black fabric partially visible, emphasizing their contours and creating a three-dimensional effect. The white tiger stands out against the monotone of the all-black body, featuring jet-black ribbing and black and white piping, creating a chic finish.
The reversible side features a golden dragon emerging from the water's edge amid splashes of water. The blue body evokes clear skies, creating a dynamic composition in which its long body looms, hidden among the clouds. The black outline of the dragon's face alone emphasizes the sense of perspective and impact.
