The 487th Bomb Group was established in 1943 under the 8th Air Force. The “8” in the center of the unit number is a chic design that mixes the looseness of the 8th Air Force's affiliation with the “Mighty Aces” and the “Mighty Bombs. The “Mighty Aces” means the invincible 8th Air Force, and the squadron was nicknamed the “Gentlemen from Hell.
