This work is a reprint of a piece from Nani of Hawaii, a brand launched by designer Betty Robertson in 1949.
The brand initially specialized in swimwear and sportswear, but soon entered the aloha shirt market in the 1950s.
The abstract border pattern of flowers was inspired by the Tahitian pareu, a traditional Tahitian garment, and is a highly finished design that shows Betty's talent and knowledge.
There are several patterns of aloha shirt designs, but this shirt uses a border pattern, a design in which the pattern runs vertically across the shirt, which became popular from the late 1940s to the 1950s.
The print is made using a technique called "Bussen," in which the pattern is extracted from the ground-dyed fabric with a bleaching agent and dyed with another color at the same time.
