The Mattson Line was a luxury cruise ship that began full-scale service between San Francisco and Honolulu in the 1930s.
This shirt is an aloha shirt with a "menu pattern" as its motif, based on the design used on the cover of restaurant menus on board the ship.
The design was created by Eugene Savage, a designer active at the time.
Based on his work, sketches were drawn and printed in Kyoto, and the pattern was highly regarded as one that symbolized the high skills of Japanese craftsmen.
Menus were brought back as souvenirs at the end of the trip, and it is said that many passengers were fascinated by the designs.
