■A Jacket Crafted by a “Genuine” Sukajan Manufacturer
Sukajans first began to be sold as souvenirs at U.S. military base stores shortly after World War II.
This reversible sukajan is crafted by TAILOR TOYO, a brand with roots in Minato Sho Shokai—a company that boasted a market share of approximately 95% during the 1950s, when sukajan production reached its peak.
Drawing on the heritage and technical expertise unique to a direct-line manufacturer that has been crafting Sukajans for over half a century, this garment has been meticulously crafted down to the finest details—from the embroidery patterns and color schemes to every minute detail.
It’s a must-have for fans, offering a chance to fully appreciate the charm of the Sukajan.
■ A Design That Defines the Sukajan
Based on a vintage piece from the early 1950s that TAILOR TOYO recently acquired, this jacket faithfully recreates its charm.
The tiger embroidery features a color version created using the same embroidery pattern as the monochrome tiger designs that TAILOR TOYO has been reissuing for some time.
This particular piece dates back to an earlier era, and the embroidery—which faithfully depicts the original artwork—features more stripes than most other tiger designs, with the red lines around the bloodshot eyes serving as a particularly striking detail.
The reversible side also follows vintage styling, featuring an eagle about to take flight from a blossoming cherry tree, rendered in colorful threads.
The chest features a Japanese landscape motif combining Mount Fuji and pine trees.
It even recreates the original balance of the era, with the embroidery placed slightly lower than usual, and is accented by tricolor ribbing that stands out against the navy body.
■Craftsmanship Inspired by Vintage Styles
For the embroidery, we use a “side-arm sewing machine”—which allows the artisan to control the swing and stitch length based on their intuition—rather than a standard automatic sewing machine.
Under the supervision of an artisan who has been creating embroidery since the 1950s, we strive to recreate the authentic look of that era.
Highly stretchy ribbing is used on the collar, cuffs, and hem to ensure a comfortable fit.
Vintage-inspired details, such as double-welt pockets and a butterfly zipper designed for reversible wear, have been faithfully reproduced.
The fabric is made of acetate, a classic material used for sukajan jackets.
Originally used as a substitute for silk thread during postwar material rationing, it features a beautiful sheen reminiscent of silk and a smooth drape.
The silhouette features a clean neckline and natural shoulder lines created by the raglan sleeves.
From a classic, true-to-size fit to a deliberately oversized look, this piece offers a wide range of styling options to suit your preferences.
