Toys McCoy, with its deep knowledge of various American cultures, including military, film, and motorcycles, has faithfully recreated the MA-1, a signature flight jacket and military wear item, while retaining a rugged look reminiscent of the original in materials and parts. This appealing piece features a silhouette adapted for everyday use through the Toys McCoy lens.
■History and Features of the MA-1
While there are various flight jacket models throughout the years, the TYPE MA-1 is considered a masterpiece due to its high level of perfection.
This nylon flight jacket was developed by the newly established U.S. Air Force, which separated from the Army Air Corps after World War II.
Different jackets were used for different temperatures depending on the flight altitude. The MA-1 was specifically designed for the "intermediate zone," which ranged from -10°C to 10°C. Due to its frequent use and high level of refinement, it was favored not only by pilots but also by ground crew (ground workers).
This model is a reproduction of the first improved MA-1 Type A, "MIL-J-8279A," bearing the label of ALBERT TURNER, the contractor that supplied many of the nylon flight jackets of the time.
■Material
The outer and lining are made of high-quality nylon, a material that began to gain popularity around the 1940s.
The grayish sage green color is reminiscent of the texture of early MA-1 jackets.
The jacket is filled with just the right amount of wool padding, making it lightweight yet highly insulating.
■Recreating Vintage Details
The MA-1 is packed with functionality to ensure comfort, mobility, storage, and warmth in the cramped cockpit.
The front zipper, engraved with "T McCOY," features a leather tab for easy opening and closing, even with gloves on.
Designed for pilots surrounded by various equipment, each part of the jacket is clearly visible, including ICS cord loops on both sides for securing in-flight communication system cords and box tabs for securing oxygen mask hoses.
The MA-1's pockets have no flaps to distinguish them from the L-2B, which was adopted at the same time.
The pocket interiors are designed for warmth.
The hem and cuffs are elastic and feature ribbing for a comfortable fit.
The left shoulder features an Air Force logo print and a cigarette pocket.
The pocket also features a pen holder with an internal cap to protect the bottom from sharp pen tips.
The storm flap, with zigzag stitching, is attached to prevent cold air from sneaking in through gaps in the zipper.
The square shape of the top of the flap is a distinctive detail of early models.
It also has inner pockets on both sides.
The back length is slightly shorter so that it does not get in the way when seated in the cockpit.
