Type G-1 Spec 55-J-14 A.PRITZKER & SONS. INC. "VS-33 SCREWBIRDS"
The G-1, a symbol of the U.S. Navy, was at one time issued to all pilots and aircrews. The crews of VS-33 (33rd Anti-Submarine Patrol Squadron), whose mission was to protect the carrier fleet from enemy submarines, also wore G-1s and decorated them with embroidered patches showing their squadron and career history.
VS-33 was based on aircraft carriers and was tasked with searching for enemy submarines approaching to attack friendly fleets from the air using radar and sonobuoys (buoys with listening devices), and destroying them with bombs and torpedoes. The submarine was to be destroyed by bombs and torpedoes. This custom version has the VS-33 patch on the right breast and the traditional VS-33 mascot "Screw Bird" patch on the right sleeve. The left sleeve bears the patch of the VX-1 (1st Test and Evaluation Squadron), which conducted development and testing of aircraft, sensors, and weapons for anti-submarine warfare, indicating that the wearer was formerly a member of VX-1. On the back is a patch from his former unit, VS-37, and a patch from the aircraft carrier Hornet, on which he served at the time, and a patch from the Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club, which attests to his service in the Vietnam War."
