■ Our Classic Hickory Shirt Gets a Makeover!
The classic hickory work shirt from EIGHT-G—a Japanese-made denim and American casual brand produced by our store, Jeans Center Sakai—is back with a fresh new look!
We’ve incorporated the hickory stripe—an indispensable design in the history of workwear—into a crisp, 13.5-ounce fabric.
Trusted artisans at our dedicated domestic factory carefully sew each shirt by hand, resulting in a garment that boasts the high durability of authentic workwear and features classic details inspired by vintage shirts—making it a highly popular choice.
■ Features and Origin of Hickory Denim
The fabric is a sturdy, crisp 13.5-ounce hickory denim.
Among denim fabrics—which have long been favored by workers for their durability—it is said that the hickory pattern originated as a way to make soot, oil, and other stains less noticeable by adding stripes to the denim.
The name “Hickory” took hold because the pattern was reminiscent of the grain of hickory wood (a tree in the walnut family). Given that this design was used in a wide variety of workwear—including pants, shirts, and jackets—it’s clear that it has long been favored by many workers.
It is also said that white was used in the stripes because workers laboring in the high-temperature environment inside steam locomotives found the blue-and-white color scheme to evoke a sense of “coolness.”
The collar features a standard regular collar shape.
An Eight G original woven label, secured with four-way stitching, is attached to the back of the neck.
Vintage-style two-hole buttons are used on the front and sleeves.
The buttons feature a recessed center, a typical workwear detail designed to prevent the thread from fraying.
■ Reproducing Work Shirt Details
The pockets have a simple, symmetrical design, but the fabric orientation on the flaps is varied to add just the right amount of accent.
Additionally, details coveted by vintage shirt enthusiasts—such as the X-shaped latch closure, the pen slot on the left pocket, and the red tab—are incorporated throughout the garment.
Triangular gussets are added to both sides of the hem to reinforce the seam where the front and back panels meet.
Beneath the hem gussets, we’ve incorporated an “open-loop finish,” where the seam is stitched in one direction without backstitching.
■ Japan’s World-Class “Sewing Expertise”
The shoulder area, which is prone to stress when worn, features a yoke construction with an extra layer of fabric.
Furthermore, key areas such as the shoulders, armholes, and underarms are finished with a double-needle overlock stitch, ensuring a robust construction.
Because armholes are curved, overlocking them is more challenging than on straight sections, making this a crucial indicator of the shirt’s quality.
■ An Evolved Silhouette
As part of the redesign, we’ve completely reevaluated the overall silhouette.
We’ve added moderate ease to the body width and sleeves, and by expanding the size range to five sizes—including the newly added XXL—we aim to cater to a wider range of customers.
Eight G shirts are designed with the Japanese physique in mind, using original patterns created from scratch, which is why they’re highly regarded for their excellent balance between body length and width.
