EIGHT LEATHERS, an up-and-coming brand newly launched in the fall of 2018 by Eight G, the oldest jeans brand in Japan, which was born in 1960, as a leather wear specialty brand.
The brand has released two leather jackets so far, while maintaining the quality and rigidity that it has cultivated through years of jeans production.
This fall, the brand celebrates its 5th anniversary since its birth, and the third car coat has been released with full anticipation.
The good old early-century appearance that is the charm of the car coat is kept as it is, and the details are arranged in an original way.
It is a piece of clothing that has gained a lot of sympathy for its quality, including the production process that spares no time or effort.
In the early 20th century, the development of motorization progressed in the U.S., and in response to this, clothes that were designed for riding in cars began to be born.
One of them was the car coat.
Since most cars at that time were open-top, it was useful to protect oneself from cold and dirt.
This model is based on the car coats of the 1920s, and while the button-fastening front and sleeve cuffs give the impression of tailor-made tailoring, the semi-long length does not get in the way when seated, and the moderately roomy shoulder area gives a sporty and functional feel.
It is said that wearing a car coat (i.e., owning a car) was a popular aspiration among the masses, as the car was still a special object of desire at that time, even though it was rapidly gaining popularity.
The raw hides are made of Italian horsehide of approximately 1.3mm thickness.
In order to bring out the natural texture of the leather, tanning, which is said to be the most important part of the leather-making process, is a time-consuming vegetable tanning process, in which craftsmen carefully finish each piece of leather to transform it from "hide" to "leather.
The leather is then placed in a huge barrel-shaped rotating machine called a drum or a taiko to loosen the fibers (milling process or striking), which gives the leather an appropriate softness and makes it richer in texture, such as wrinkles and grains.
The leather is made of "brown-core" leather, which is dyed brown on the base and finished by spraying black on top, so that the brown of the base is gradually exposed and the leather ages well.
The long length, simple construction with few decorations, and relatively large area of leather make it possible to fully enjoy the expression of the leather and its change over time, which is one of the charms of the car coat.
