It began to be sold as a souvenir jacket at a store of a U.S. military base soon after the war, but “Minato Shokai,” the predecessor of Taylor Toyo, occupied as much as 95% of the delivery share in the 1950s when the production was at its peak.
The texture of the fabric and the technique of embroidery are faithfully reproduced from those days.
This model is characterized by its furry material and Alaskan pattern, which is rare and popular even in the vintage world.
Late 1950s Style Velveteen Souvenir Jacket “MOUNTAIN GOAT” × “ALASKAN FLAG
This is a rare Alaskan patterned souvenir jacket that is very popular even in vintage clothing. It is also known as “Alaskan Flag”. This jacket is a reprint of one from the late 1950s with a particularly rare Alaskan goat pattern. The sleeves are decorated with a dog sled, and the chest is decorated with a lightning bolt and a polar bear, an extremely gorgeous combination of motifs. Alaska, with its great wilderness, is called “America's last frontier,” and that message is also embroidered at the bottom.
The reversible side features state flags, Mt. McKinley, totem poles, and other motifs unique to Alaska, and was produced by Harbor Trading (the predecessor of Taylor Toyo) at the request of the U.S. military in the 1950s and displayed at the PX (store) in the Alaska base.”
What is a Besshin Sukajan?
Although many early Sukajans were made of reversible acetate fabric, there were also models made of furry bifurcated fabric as a variation at that time.
The padding in the acetate fabric increases warmth, and the quilting on the reversible side of the acetate fabric to hold the padding is one of its features.
By the way, “Betsuchin” is a coined Japanese word from “Velveteen”.
Craftsmanship that produces powerful designs
Embroidery of Sukajan is done not with a general automatic sewing machine but with a special sewing machine called a “horizontal swing machine.
Therefore, the embroidery is so delicate that the embroidery's swing width, needle length, thread color, etc. depend on the skill and sense of the craftsman.
The ska-janes of Taylor Toyo are supervised by craftsmen who have been involved in embroidery since the 1950s and are parties to the history of embroidery, so you can enjoy the excellent workmanship.
The front has a zipper closure, and the zipper is a reversible version of a Japanese zipper that existed until the mid-1950s.
The pockets are double-hemmed pockets that can be said to be a proof of careful manufacturing.
The sleeve ribs are seamless for an excellent fit.
