This is Taylor Toyo's reversible Sukajan 2025 Spring/Summer model, “ROARING TIGER” × “JAPAN MAP”.
Sukajans began to be sold as souvenirs at U.S. military base stores soon after the war, but in the 1950s, when production was at its peak, as much as 95% of the delivery share was occupied by “Kosho Shokai,” the predecessor of Toyo Enterprise Co. The company was “Minato Shokai,” the predecessor of Toyo Enterprises, which developed the Tailor Toyo brand.
The dress handled by the historic brand that has been making Sukajan for more than half a century since then is known as a gem that Sukajan lovers want to keep if they like Sukajan because of the outstanding attention to the texture of the fabric, embroidery techniques, and so on.
The surface of this piece from the early 1950s features a deformed tiger on a green body. Among the many tiger patterns available, this one, in which the entire body is depicted from a horizontal angle, is extremely rare. The elaborate use of two different colored threads for the white mane and the white eyes, fangs, and claws is in keeping with the vintage design. In addition, the block letters “JAPAN” and the larger-than-usual embroidery of an eagle and tiger on the chest are also rare and highly valued in the vintage world.
The reversible side has a monochrome body with champagne gold color on the body and under sleeves, which is rare even in vintage. The pattern on the back is a Japan map pattern, but the gorgeous embroidery of an eagle and a dragon glaring at each other across a map of Japan surrounded by red circles has been reproduced. Although the color scheme is based on light shades, the use of black for the word “Japan” and the ribbing tightens the overall look.
